  •  How much retiscence by clergy to report abuse (7+ / 0-)

is from a genuine question of faith and/or dogma, and how much is simply from a fear to get involved, in what is sure to be a messy and emotional legal fight that could tear a congregation apart?

Too many times, as we have seen, it is much easier to look the other way and not get involved.  Doing the right thing can be very difficult sometimes.

    •  Good questions all. (9+ / 0-)

I think that most of the reluctance stems from fear of involvement and the consequences to congregations and pastors if the involvement becomes public knowledge. This would be the case in my denomination-I don't think I could unearth a single pastor who would go on record as supporting any type of abuse from a theological, biblical or faith perspective.

There do exist denominations/congregations who would excuse abuse on the grounds that it is not abuse, but rather done out of love, disciple, and to fulfill the responsibility of the parent to raise obedient, God fearing children.

Clearly, the latter group is utterly abhorrent to me. And I would challenge pastors whose reluctance stems from fear of involvement to look with discernment to the health of a congregation in which abuse goes unreported and unaddressed. This isn't a fine pastoral line to me, but rather a bright, sharp pastoral and prophetic line.
