  •  The gazillion dollars plus (8+ / 0-)

voter suppression is a bad sign but we live in interesting times and...we have the intertubes.

When someone is impatient and says, "I haven't got all day," I always wonder, How can that be? How can you not have all day? George Carlin

    •  The voter suppression issue is a big deal. This (12+ / 0-)

is going to be a close election (it almost kills me to believe this) and every vote will be needed.  We really need to help those who might be affected make certain they are properly registered way ahead of time.  So any older folks and college kids you know or folks who have recently moved, start checking now as to their registration status and get fixing what needs fixing.

      •  This is important advice (7+ / 0-)

I've been thinking this very thing recently.

      •  Litigation will solve some voter suppression, BUT (1+ / 0-)

... the most effective work will be to (1) help people register, (2) verify that they are registered and (3) do everything we can to get them to the polls, preferably early.

The anti-voter GOP activists will be pulling any number of dirty tricks to disenfranchise voters, from verification mailings (assuming any postcards that are returned mean the voter doesn't live there) to vote reminders with erroneous addresses for precincts, to last minute "challenge-this-voter" lists to local officials and poll watchers. It's going to take a lot of leg work to get out the vote in 2012, and to be sure it counts!

They probably will try last minute, under-the-radar localized stuff, making it very hard to contest in court fast enough to correct the suppression.

Important as door-to-door precinct-level work always is, this year it must include voter protection!
