Earlier this evening, I was talking to my housemate about the History Channel's movie about the Hatfield's and the McCoy's.  He was telling me how his ex-wife's family was related to the Hatfield's and how he knows (because she told him) that the Hatfield's were actually quite wealthy and sophisticated, while the McCoy's were just plain "country folk".  I replied to him that he can't take her word as "proof" of anything since most people tend to believe their family roots are much more "high and mighty" then they actually are. (I have learned this from personal experience, documentaries, and programs on the History Channel).   He of course pooh-poohed me.  After all he is a Republican and I am just a Democrat.  It is nice to hear someone who actually does genealogy reaffirm the facts of exaggeration and wrongness you find.

    •  Thats an excellent example (0+ / 0-)

Its human nature to resist truth after having ingrained a different truth their entire lives. Imagine when the flat-earthers were told the world was really round. People went to jail over it.
