between religion and ideology. As long as you have some leaders, a hardcore 'central comitee' and a willing fanbase with a message that appeals more to your gut then to your brain, anything can happen.

They are a dangerous cancer for society: they grow fast, suddenly they're in control and then freedom dies.

These American Taliban (or whatever people with fundamentalistic ideas about God or Society), they scare me. They seem to forget that through history most of the killings were done in the name of God or Ideology. Is that the price they want to pay ?

    •  people who want to belong and be right (5+ / 0-)

people who need some sort of defined enemy to hate and fear and to blame... to fight against.

Enough of them combined and focused by a few charismatic leaders under the right conditions can be a serious danger.

there are always groups and nut case leaders on the margins who could luck into power if extreme calamities happen... the more extreme the more extreme the opportunists can be to take advantage...

So we are relatively safe from the serious nuts while times are within reasonable bounds...

But a corrupted military with key brass and Nuke controllers somehow infiltrated... and a series of orchestrated events if the economy and or world conditions worsen drastically could be used to leverage wider support and lead to something unthinkable that would nullify our democracy...  very unlikely but not beyond the bounds of possibility and the worst aspects of human nature, fear and ignorance... even while most are not in agreement... too many will acquiesce if the core of any resistance in ruling elites, politics are neutralized or silenced.

are usually displayed by extreme religion or ideology. Especially in times of crisis. I think it all has to do with a human trait. For one, it's 'Power to rule' or, on a more basic level, be the one who survives.Control the others or kill your fellow man for food. The other option is 'Follow the Leader'. A different interpretation of 'Fight or Flight', isn't?

Lot's of stories have been written about the possibilities you've described. And I agree: doesn't need much and nothing will be the same afterwards. Sadly people make gut-choices, fueled by fear and rhetoric, used by some to gain their power (by whatever means). They'll do it now and especially after the shit hits some fan, it's part of human nature.

But somehow I feel we're in a changing era. Look back at the beginning of the 18th, 19th and 20th century. Each time powers were shifting, cultural and technological innovations exploded. New things, thoughts and possibilities came about, but often at a price, we realized later. And the rest of those centuries was spent reacting to those first decades. Sometimes I wish I could be 'revived' in, oh let's say 2100 and look back at these times. I'm really curious about seeing the history 'books' then.
