  •  Prohibition=more complicated than just enforcing (3+ / 0-)

Calvinist Christianity.  Prohibition, misguided though it was, was part of the Women's Rights movement. Men were almost always the sole bread-winners in the family, and most men were working under onerous conditions that resulted in getting drunk about the only escape.  Meanwhile, women--who had little or no opportunity to earn--were trying to keep the family together and fed while the bread-winner spent his pay-packet at the saloon.

Some men and women worked together for unions and fairness, but many families were victims of classic "divide and conquer" set-ups.  The men got drunk for a little relief. The women, who were not allowed to vote for social justice or anything else, blamed the men and alcohol.

"...it's difficult to imagine what else Republicans can do to drive women away in 2012, unless they decide to bring back witch-hanging. And I wouldn't put it past them." James Wolcott
