"I know about the American Outback" is condescending and insulting.
Geez, seeing as I am a pure product of the American heartland, culturally and ethnically, on both sides of my family (more recently on my paternal line), I guess I felt entitled to a bit of flippancy :)

As far as this, yes, I absolutely agree:

If the rate of unemployment goes up a bit, the economy goes down for any reason, if people feel more pain, they might just reach what I call a "Fuck it!" point  THey won't care.  If the fascists can make the trains run on time and reduce inflation, then the heck with it.
Yes, and don't think those wanting to hold on to political power aren't well aware of this, and aren't working it to their advantage, with every ounce of conniving they can muster. A failing economy and job market, very much, will have the masses in the pocket of the Kochs and any other evil and well-funded geniuses out there. In desperation, the pinched and hard-up-against-it electorate can only vote the "right" way. In "The Shock Doctrine," the Canadian scholar Naomi Klein argues, credibly, that social and economic instability are created deliberately, and are used by political interests to gain or consolidate power over the masses. She draws on the examples of South Africa, Poland, and other states, to illustrate her point.

You've had Republicans talking openly about wanting to wreck the economy, deliberately, apparently, for just this reason. It's a real danger, I agree. It's scary stuff. To me, it's scarier at this point than the "rise of religious fundamentalism," with the implication that religious fundamentalism is being co-opted in new ways by the political RW (while it bears keeping an eye on, I don't believe that's an immediate danger).

It's here they got the range/ and the machinery for change/ and it's here they got the spiritual thirst. --Leonard Cohen
