    you are required to have bike lights, but are forbidden from using battery-powered lights, since the batteries might wear out. Wheel-powered generators are universal. It's an old technology; they've used them for 50-60 years at least. The generator is about the size of a D-cell battery, mounted on a spring-loaded pivot. To turn it on, you flip it down so a little rubber wheel on the end contacts the rim of the bike wheel, which drives it. The light is brighter the faster you go, & goes out when you stop.
