    That was the whole point of their phony prosecution of JE.

    But...the whole legal campaign finance landscape changed after they initiated this damn litigation, when the Supes ruled in favor of Citizens United.   It made it even more ludicrous what they were trying to prosecute Edwards for.

    Clown circus.  I'm glad he escaped.

      Individuals could always do unlimited independent expenditures on behalf of candidates.  CU allows corporations to do them as well; SpeechNow allows individuals (and corporations) to come together to do them jointly.

        But the judicial milieu had changed radically since the Rethugs initiated this prosecution of JLE.   It's the aspect of "unaccountability" of the donations that was highlighted by Citizens United.  The secrecy of who donates what to whom.   If it's okay now, it was okay in 2008, in the spirit of the new Supes ruling.
