them:  Three days ago we celebrated the 21st birthday of our friends' son.  He was born at 26 weeks, weighed less than two pounds and spent his first three months in the hospital.  When he was in the hospital, the only way his parents could let us see him was via videos.  In one of them, they had to shut off the camera and pause - because he'd once again stopped breathing and they were afraid they'd lose him.  (They only showed us that video weeks later, after he'd survived the episode.)  It was touch-and-go for a long time.

There were a few health issues in his younger years, and he still has to contend with some food sensitivities, but overall he's a healthy, handsome and creative young man.  He's home from school for the summer, working as a lifeguard and a CPR instructor.

When I think back to that little peanut in his mom's arms, it's hard to believe it's the same guy.  Modern medicine can do amazing things for preemies.

Wishing your friends' baby girl as much health and happiness in her life.

have friends like you who care so much.  Any little things you can do like running some errands or bringing them a meal will be a welcome break.  They won't always want to ask for help because they don't want to burden friends, but making a simple offer - I'm going by the store, do you guys need anything as long as I'm there? - will make it easier for them to accept.

        Good luck to all.

and loving community. If love was enough, all by itself, this child would fly. We'll make sure that have everything they need.

did well with modern NICU care, I once had an 80 something home care patient who was born under 2 #. At that time, the only option was to keep them warm in a shoebox - in an oven... As hard to believe as it was, the woman was quite competent mentally.
