    Meanwhile, most of the Japanese cars sold in the US are made here---Toyota is one of the largest employers in Tennessee.

    The whole idea of "balance of trade" is now outdated, outmoded, and irrelevant.  When the same multi-national global corporations run the economy everywhere in every country, then nation-states and national borders are simply meaningless, and nation-based "trade figures" are irrelevant. It's just a pointless relic of an outdated 20th century worldview.
