    Renewable fuels have been ready for prime time far longer than
    fossil fuels.

    The most obvious proof is the distraction of the inferior internal combustion engine replacing external combustion.

    External combustion engines are even now being deployed by -who else? - the military.

    The Republicans want to put a stop to that.  I hope you don't as well. :-)

      I think of a rocket or jet engine. Do have a link to the technology of which you speak?

        The first is a racing car that may eventually get to the Bonneville Salt Flats to challenge the English record for steam powered speed

        and the second is a cartoon representation of FoxNews' "corpse eating automoton."  DARPA's EATR (Energetic Autonomous Tactical Robot) is currently in suspension I hear but has the engine.  The brains to select "food" for the robot might take awhile.

        The Navy has apparently classified uses for the all-fuel engine.  The Amy is planning to use a supplementary engine in its tanks.  The Marines have a different supplier that, as I understand it, only has an engine on the drawing board.

        James Crank [no, I am not making up that name] is the best expert I know of on the subject.

        Crank, who now owns one of only 15 Doble steamers left in the world, was just 13 years old at the time. But he had already cut his teeth on auto mechanics and begun to develop an appreciation of finely tooled cars and other precision-made machinery.

        One of his uncles ran the Mare Island motor pool garage for the U.S. Navy. Another was an automotive parts distributor. ``On my fifth birthday, when other kids usually got a toy car or whatever, my Uncle Bert gave me a small carburetor and a red-handled screwdriver,'' beamed Crank, 63, a burly, ruddy-faced man with powerful arms who wears his white hair in a burr cut.

        Crank went on to a long and distinguished career as a metallurgy and optics engineer with Lockheed Martin. He worked on the Mercury and Apollo projects as well as several space satellites and the Trident missile, before he retired three years ago.

        Retired?  Not so's you'd notice.  His writings on the subject are voluminous and you should be able to select what you wish.  He remains actively involved in development.

        I have talked to the inventor of one of the engines, the Cyclone engine, and he startled me by admitting that the stigma of a steam engine is often insurmountable.  I had asked him why he didn't call it an organic rankine cycle waste heat engine, which it is - a far cry from the engine powering the old Stanley Steamer and Crank's Doble.

        I guess the problem is that he gets much of his enthusiasm and funding from steam engine  enthusiasts.

        His is a piston engine unlike the turbine engines that are normal and superior for large scale ORC engines.

    •  Price points have not been cheaper for solar & (0+ / 0-)

      wind untill recently, just this year wind came in at between 3.3 cents per Kw and 6.5 cents/Kw.

      Solar will soon catch up.

      SO no, renewables have not been ready for prime time untill just recently.
