Some spray-in foam insulations are isocyanate-based rather than urethane-based, and pose a hazard to people with chronic exposures to them before they're cured.  So far as I know they don't offgas HCN unless burned, but have plenty of other problems.

Also, 'curing' insulation means the volatile organics are off-gassing, and since most construction practices these days spec for very tightly sealed buildings envelopes, to maximize HVAC efficiency, all the volatiles get vented into the indoor air, to such an extent that good practice recommended by ACGIH calls for ventilating the building for a few days before occupancy, while all that new carpeting and paint and insulation and whatever farts out vinyl.

Not an architect or CIH, but I suspect that the emphasis on sealed building envelopes and reliance on recirculated air for sake of energy efficiency does some really bad things to indoor air quality even when no actual hazardous chemicals are present.

Also, to the gentleman below-- I'm not a fire engineer, but it is my understanding that petrochemical products like plastics can in some circumstances function as accelerants.

about the use of extruded polystyrene foam as a building material. Builders in Texas construct houses out of studs, styrofoam, and stucco. The ones next to golf courses have chunks taken out where golf balls hit them, and heaven help them if there's a hail storm.
