    The case began as a petition "Please let us show this one movie on one channel on one particular day" and Roberts ordered it be re-argued on the basis of "If you've got the bucks, you can show any movie anywhere anytime".

    I too would hesitate to ask for a narrow ruling on the facts of my case from this court.

      the deputy solicitor general who was arguing for the law the first time the Citizens United case came up for oral argument, and that offered the conservative justices a perfect opportunity to order rebriefing and expand the case.  This was explained in Jeffrey Toobin's recent New Yorker article on the case.
