Some year I will have to work one of the California rides.

I have done 5 of the Boston->NY rides, as a mechanic.  This year I expect to again be working the "Harbor to the Bay" one day ride, a 130 mile Boston -> P'town event.

I really enjoyed the costumes (riders and crew), and decoration of bikes (you have to take extra care when working on a bike covered in fake leopard fur, so you don't get grease where it doesn't belong).

Seeing your photo's, reminded me of a Sunday morning pit, where one volunteer who was a dead ringer for Jamie Farr, in a french maid costume (with proper Klingeresque  army boots) holding up a silver plastic tray with cups of blue gatorade, and offering "Smurf Piss"

If you want a crew's eye view you can take a look at my cycling page where I have some (dated) writeups.

This planet needs a lot more kids who think taking a lawnmower apart is more fun than playing a videogame.

even if it's dated. I know many people who've done the Boston-New York rides and quite a few who do the Harbor-to-the-Bay Ride. I have a good friend in P-town and would love to do that ride sometime.

While I'm sure I'm capable of doing more work on my bike than fixing flats and keeping drivetrain clean, I'd rather have an expert take care of the more advanced stuff. For that reason I'm a big fan of guys like you.
