Allow me to suggest that this is a problem; not anyone's fault, to be sure, but something important is being overlooked.
We definitely need to get this on the agenda for NN13. Especially since it will be in the bay area. Husband and I hope to make it since it's in our back yard. Can't wait since we are NN virgins.

What a ton of great info in this diary will need to dig in once I get home tonight.

      •  put together more than one panel suggestion (8+ / 0-)

also, if there are any diaries about writing panel proposals, find them.

a lot of the panels that made it this year were sponsored by large orgs.  like sierra club.

        •  Oh, absolutely. (7+ / 0-)

I have very good ties to GMHC here in NYC, I'm sure they'd be interested. And the people at Netroots itself are good friends, as well.

that is my big takeaway from this year.  you might want a global perspective too.

            •  Honestly (5+ / 0-)

And you are absolutely right, a global perspective is missing here, but this is practically a novel by itself, and incomplete even domestically.

But for a panel, yeah. Absolutely required.

with the very clear LGBTQ presence amongst Kossacks HIV/AIDS was rarely mentioned.

Not that other issues are not worthy, but with all the info that rolls across the pixels I was surprised. OK, truthfully I noticed, but I'm not a fanatic on the subject.

Speaking of the voiceless, I really think there should be more panel(s) on American Indians. MB and navajo may propose again, and as you said, AIDS is a big issue there.

So the question is, how do panels not put on by Sierra Clubs or Greenpeace get picked? Who are these 'staff and volunteers' Adam keeps mentioning? I did see one comment by a volunteer pre-NN12, but that was it, and she was involved in exhibits.

Adam B wrote a good piece on the process. Following the guidelines he listed, I do not understand why MB and Navajo were turned down, especially in Minneapolis.

And yes, I will continue to beat this dead horse down to molecule status.

So I will be very interested in seeing how MBNYC proceeds.

But how these panels get picked, I do not know.

One of the choices the staff has to make is whether to allow panels that overlap in topic, and whether for example to choose a panel on a narrow topic in addition to or instead of the broader topic.

So for example, if there's a strong proposal for a panel about access to health care, and your panel is about access to HIV care, they may find the topics redundant and feel the broader proposal will have more general appeal and cover more people's needs than yours.

It's worth noting that NN never covers every topic of interest or importance to progressives. There's only so much time in three days. It doesn't mean no one cares about clean water, for example.

Meanwhile, don't be afraid to keep writing great diaries about it and getting the word out to everyone.

Fry, don't be a hero! It's not covered by our health plan!

and I hope I was clear in pointing this out, I'm not saying Netroots Nation should have done anything differently. I work with those folks, they're pretty amazing people. All of them.

What irks me is that the LGBT community itself isn't really talking about a disastrous health problem, for us and others, and that fact is ultimately reflected in what NN gets offered and the pool of material it chooses from.

                    Hence this diary ;-)
