    ...is that he really did bring something new to the table.  Liberals were pretty sure c.1980 that it was a bad idea to privatize and cut taxes on the wealthy, but those things hadn't been done in modern (post-FDR) by either party and it wasn't outlandish for people not wedded to liberalism to wonder if maybe they'd work, after 20 years of very desultory economic growth except in defense-heavy parts of the country.  Of all the iterations of conservatism since then, in both parties, Reagan's is the one that I can most understand because people just didn't know any better, and it's the one whose protagonist I have the most respect for because he had to fight within his own party to get those ideas accepted even before he fought a general election.  He's the only conservative who did any heavy lifting.
