It was pretty daunting to even write this diary.

Thank you so much for the help. More appreciated than words can express.

what sort of alternator problem is it?
if you're handy at all you can get a replacement / rebuilt ... $500 plus seems awfully high to me.

Of course, we just put $150 into one in March.

      •  Alternator & starter parts for a Ford Focus '02 (0+ / 0-)

My friend says it will cost $509 to get all the parts & work done at his shop. Another repair shop told me it would take nearly double that.

        •  before you go to that expense, (1+ / 0-)

shop around. Where you live is there a Pep Boys or Auto Zone or O'Reilly's? Honestly, seriously, that car's out of warranty on years if not miles now. So a DIY fix will make you richer two ways: you will know more, for next time, and you will spend less, this time.

www.rockauto.com is a great place to source parts.

          •  I have an autozone near me, thanks! (0+ / 0-)

I will ask him if my buying the parts there would help.

My car has very low miles only 77,800+ and I can't afford another. $509 seemed cheap to me after checking on the crazy labor costs elsewhere put it nearly double.

I'm great at fixing computers but cars are well beyond me. I don't have the facilities.

we'll find out for you. My experience with alternators is all on Dodges (well, okay, the first one back in the dark ages of Bush1's reign was a Plymouth, but it was still a Mopar slant six) ... but seriously. It's taking off a belt, undoing a bracket-bolt, slipping the old part off, the new part on, and refastening everything.

Now the starter -- is it burnt up or is the solenoid bad, or do you know yet? These too have bushings and brushes and can be rebuilt.

He's a friend who works at a repair shop and wouldn't cheat me. he wrote down the list of parts and only added $50 for his shop.

I haven't the tools or experience so I was trusting him. Heck I only have an electric screw driver and that's it. lol

I know the starter was replaced in 2005 and the part he said was burnt. My battery is aged and needs replacing cause the alternative burned it out (or wore it down is that the right word?)

THANKS for helping me understand some terms.

                •  OK, something ain't right if you're on the 3d (0+ / 0-)

                  starter already -- it's a Ford, yeah?

Does your starter have a solenoid?

I know Mopar ones do [well, ok, the ones I know how to work on. We don't have anything newer in the tribe than a 2001, and everything we're driving these days is a 318 truck -- one each SWB pickup, in El Paso, one each 1992 (!) 4x2 Ramcharger, currently in the shop 'cause I don't have the wherewithal to turn brake rotors, and my 1997 SWB extended-cab pickup (think Walker, Texas Ranger's truck, only not the 4x4)].

You may have some sort of short in one of the switches for the ignition if it's eating solenoids that fast -- you said under 80K mileswise, right?

If the starter motor itself is burnt up, that's a separate issue, but still an electrical / ignition one. I've got a bud who works for AutoZone, and he says parts for his car ('09 Fusion) to replace the starter and alternator would come in well under $300.

If you're working with a buddy, he's not gonna rip you off too much for labor, but do find out whether you can get a better deal on the parts. Seriously. In fact you can check Auto Zone's prices online, and they'll give you the figures for your zip code.

The starter was already replaced once in 2005 which is why I was pretty upset about it being burnt again. That doesn't seem right to me at all and I'm  neophyte about cars.

I will ask him about a short in it or how to check for one and how that costs.

So under $300 plus battery cost plus $50 for his shop time for the whole thing. I'm meeting him monday to go talk about me getting the parts in advance and if he can work a cheaper deal.

                    FINGERS CROSSED!!!

Thx so much for the tips!

                    •  so, if you have online access, find a Ford board (0+ / 0-)

like the one I regularly read on Mopars ... www.Allpar.com ... there will be car guys there who will know your car better than I do.
