  •  I don't have much issue with the use of the (4+ / 0-)

term "cracker". The way I see it, the term refers to white racists. As a white person, I've never taken offense at the term. I've never had it used as an insult to me personally.

Back in the day, I was called 'whitey' and 'ofay' on a few occasions. I was bothered by it some, but eventually I became friends with most of the guys who had insulted me.

I despise any term that reduces a human being to nothing more than their skin color or ethnicity. However, I see cracker as a term that has more to do with racism than skin color, although I realize that it refers to racist of a particular hue.

I certainly understand what the diarist is feeling, and while there are no doubt more politically correct ways to say what they said, I'm willing to give someone leeway when they are ranting about events that deeply wounded them.

Here's my take on it - the revolution will not be blogged, it has to be slogged. - Deoliver47

Race labels are just that  - 'cracker' certainly didn't originally mean that the person was a racist; Lawton Chiles used to describe himself as one. It's how you use a term and coming from someone of a different race, you have to be extremely careful. I found this diarist's use of it extremely offensive. I've never been called 'cracker' to my face, though I'm also not originally from the US south - I have been called 'Conchy Joe' and that's a similar term. It's been said to me in both a friendly and racist way. In any case, it's particularly stupid to use race labels when you are trying to complain about racism.

Did you ever grow anything in the garden of your mind?

that's the argument Chris Rock uses about the word nigger.  let me paraphrase:

The way I see it, the term refers to ignorant black people. As a black person, I've never taken offense at the term.

      and then mally could add:

I've never had it used as an insult to me personally.
does that mitigate that word for you?  it doesn't for me.
