I had a few days there after Providence last week.  And I knew there was an ancestor there.  Many ggfather (& mother.)  Turns out, he was one of the earlier settlers - on the island by 1660 or so.  Got recruited for his trade, and stayed.

Had nine children.  Eight daughters and a son who died young.  The island's full of place names of all the various families the daughters married into.  But his own last name is gone, except on a gravestone and in given names.

I'd always known it was there, but that little twig of the family tree'd not much gotten my attention.  Breathing the air, seeing the views over the ocean, seeing the names attached to things, even visiting the graveyard brought it all to life to a much greater degree than before.

Yeah, I'm way late.  Didn't get to the computer much the past coupla days.

Grab all the joy you can. (exmearden 8/10/09)
