  •  Similar center was started in Hamilton Co, IN as (5+ / 0-)

Chelsea's Place.  If looks like a private home in a nice neighborghoood where families can bring their child to make statement of charges to social workers.  Inteviews are taped in case they are needed for court.  Police, Meidcal, court officers, or other professionals observe from behind two way glass but primary communication is with the child through one trusted social worker. It's definately a one-on-one situation to provide comfort for the child.

This started as a small program in a small community, but has proved to be effective so it been expanded by use for the larger Indianapolis community and other state-wide agencies.

The service club I belong too suppots Chelsea's place by supplying snacks, toys to play with while waiting and other things which may help the child be comfortable.

In reality, her father had been sexually abusing her since she was 11 years of age. Chaucie found the courage to report her abuse when she was 18. Her father was prosecuted, but after a two-week trial the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict. The case was subsequently resolved through plea negotiations and Chaucie’s father received a sentence on charges of sexual battery. The strain of her abuse by her father and the inability of the legal system to adequately address her case took its toll and on December 26, 1995 Chaucie took her own life.

It does follow essentially the same model as the Dallas center, which is considered a national pioneer for the approach.

Not only is this a key component, but as a result of this structure, more often than not those observers behind the glass have been exposed to more extensive training than their peers on what to expect, why children may speak or act in certain ways, what kinds of clues the social worker is looking for etc. Conversely, the social worker has had special training on what kinds of things those interested observers need to know, and how to develop the interview so that it can pass muster for legal purposes.
