  •  My dad was a vet (6+ / 0-)

spent the end of WWII on Guam but never saw combat but got into the thick of it in Korea.  Was with first helicopter squadron at Danang in 64.
Retired after his return from Vietnam - but returned to Vietnam as a contractor for 6 more years.  That's when he witnessed and lived the shenanigans of the MIC - he struggled with "my country, right or wrong" after that.
He too, came from a very poor upbringing and the military was definitey his ticket to professional and financial success due to the unprecedented exceptions the military made during WWII.
Anyway, he died a couple years ago and I miss him more every day - I got cheated out of his last 15 years of life due to Alzheimer"s.
He wasn't the best dad in the world but he did his best.
    Thanks for your diary, OPOL
