regulars could quickly put in a comment that succinctly
    - cites the derailing comment for adhominen points, etc.
    - requests it be ignored to promote constructive discussion of the diary.

Dirk McQuigley's comment you blockquoted is a great example - using the subject line for the alert.

There are a lot of times a diary will cover something that is closely associated with another problem that is out there. Sometimes it is helpful to enlarge the picture, others not. I don't think that is what you are talking about, it does strike me as the sort of discussion other commenters are concerned about squashing. Doubt that would be a problem.

I do find derailling very irritating. While I occasionally check a profile before responding, generally I recognize the people who make constructive, informed, interesting and funny comments, the ones who grind the same axe over and over (which I should mea culpa), the provocateurs, and trolls.

The first half of this comment to G2geek is essentially what these folks are probably intuitively triggering.

This diary got me to go check something I saw recently and now want to read.

Brown Thrasher's diaries for the Daily Kos Logic and Rhetoric group.

Hirschman's 1991 book The Rhetoric of Reaction: Perversity, Futility, Jeopardy dealt with this non productive form of debate. What I think we need to recognize is what triggers our desires to defend whatever morality we believe in, and that stepping back from being triggered, keeps the stress hormones from getting over activated and wearing us out. Keeping the powder dry is the best move in some situations. The trick is figuring out which ones.
