I worry about that kind of thing any time I think of bringing someone in to do work on the house.  Helps me to understand why some people would prefer to just bulldoze everything and start over.  Although your experience seems to be turning into that.

About that video cam ... For us, a pipe was backing up, with water burbling in the toilet as the air was pushed up the pipe.  The first plumber sent an auger (or whatever you call those things) down from a roof vent - and rammed it into the base of the toilet.  Fortunately, he didn't break it, but I was done with him.  For the next plumber, I removed the toilet myself so he could access the pipes more easily.  He seemed to remove any blockage, but lo and behold, it happened again.  The third time, I had them use the video camera - an extra $100 on top of the regular charge.  Total cost when it was all done; $500.  Problem?  We had finally installed low-flow toilets, and the toilet paper was collecting in a dip in the line, and not dissolving.  Solution?  Buy toilet paper that dissolves more quickly.

I wonder how many other people have been hit with this easily solvable problem, caused, sort of, by attempting to reduce unnecessary water usage.
