  •  This is the real problem with getting appropriate (4+ / 0-)

healthcare in this country, employers still cover a substantial portion of the cost.  If they didn't we would have had single payer 50 years ago.

instead of the mess we have now.

Of course the same goes for automatic withholding of taxes...

      and Union dues.

If people paid taxes out of pocket they would pay a lot more attention and demand accountability from their government.

why payroll deduction was invented.  That, and to give the government a quick boost one year when the deficit was looming, by getting the money BEFORE IT WAS OFFICIALLY DUE.  (I think this was one of FDR's little tricks).  Originally, income tax was paid in a lump sum on April 15.  Withholding allowed them to collect in advance that one year, boosting the government's budget without officially raising taxes.  It was an accounting gimmick, but also a scheme to clamp down on tax avoidance, as it prevented taxpayers from sliding under the radar by never filing in a pre-computerized world.  Later iterations of government realized that after people got used to the deduction, they weren't nearly as likely to rebel, as they saw the tax coming out in small increments rather than one large lump sum.  And since in the majority of cases the government took out more than was actually owed, they were absolutely EAGER to fill out those forms in April.

I have lost count of how many times I've tried to explain to my teabagger dad that if you really want more small business to start and succeed, guarantee health care on a national basis.

I know that that is a HUGE obstacle for many people who are trying to do just that. Think of how many jobs could be created just by freeing up those hundreds of dollars each month.

      •  Employers have not embraced health care (0+ / 0-)

Reform because it allows them to hold employees hostage.  If health care was not tied to your job employee turnover would increase substantially.
