and I were born in the sweet spot when tuition rates were much lower and therefore student loans were much less of a burden.

College tuition rates even at public unis have risen twice as fast as the cost of living. It's terrifying.

"Mistress of the Topaz" is now available in paperback! Link here: http://www.double-dragon-ebooks.com/single.php?ISBN=1-55404-900-8

    •  Tru dat. I'm eternally grateful that (0+ / 0-)

I received enough scholarship/grant aid (and help from my wonderful 'rents) that I was able to escape a private undergrad with only a molehill of debt rather than a mountain.  Of course, I busted my ass to make sure I got out in four years, which didn't hurt either (five to six years is increasingly becoming the norm).  I was also lucky enough to win a teaching assistantship that paid for my master's degree at a public university.

I shudder at the debt loads some of my classmates and students are facing.  Hard to believe that not so long ago people were able to get through med school or law school owing less than those with bachelor's degrees typically owe today.
