    If (in some wierd alternate universe, work with me here) Romney were to be elected, and he made a big speech against gay marriage, would we expect a poll shift by 7 points to the right?  Is there a "setting" period where people adjust to the new standard?

    (Consider, if a pol came out against interracial marriage, he would be laughed long before this is the case for pols and marriage equality?).

    Minority rights should never be subject to majority vote.

      Because everybody already knows he's against it.  But, consider how quiet Romney and the Republicans in general have been about gay marriage this past month.  We're not too far from that 'laughed at' phase, I think.  

      What if a pro-marriage equality Democrat were elected in 2016, and then publicly changed positions?  Would we see movement backwards?  Probably not, because there would be loud and vocal opposition from within the Democratic party.
