  •  There goes my excuse for having (8+ / 0-)

grown up in Wisconsin! At least you probably have a handle on the geography, which was confusing to me.

    Thanks for stopping by, Youff!

I know the southern part of the state, east to west and back again, from having traveled it so often as a child.  Wilkes-Barre I mostly know from when I was a kid, and went to sleepaway camp after Hurricane Agnes had wrought her destruction, and we campers were bused there and spent a day trying to un-muddy people's houses.

National Guard everywhere, and the main cemetery was closed off with a big wooden fence.  (Ask anyone in New Orleans what happens when a cemetery meets a water table...)

Nobody needs an excuse for not knowing PA's geography, though.  All you need to say in your own defense is "Pennsylvania is the size of France."  IOW, as large as a largish European country, with all the variations in geography that entails.

To make the argument that the media has a left- or right-wing, or a liberal or a conservative bias, is like asking if the problem with Al-Qaeda is do they use too much oil in their hummus. Al Franken

I had no idea ... no 24 hour cable news back then.  Sure explains why I'm having trouble tracking down old cemeteries in the area.

As to the size of the state, in another of my lines, the family Bible indicates my g-grandfather was born in "Western Pennsylvania." Seriously?!? Fortunately, his death certififcated narrowed it down to Greene Co. or I would have given up on the hobby.

in south-central PA, Agnes knocked out a covered bridge...which went downstream and knocked out another covered bridge...then landed on a street by the creek and it took two years for that road to reopen.

Meanwhile, another bridge (regular, not covered) had huge chunks of road surface (concrete) picked up by the flood waters and deposited on the banks next to it.  I think that bridge was repaired more quickly than the covered ones.

We had a trickle of water in the basement, and my mother was in a tizzy of "OMG, what if this destabilized the house!" while meanwhile her friend's basement was full of water up to the top step leading to the living space.  (Went over there a couple of days later -- their washer and dryer were still floating b/c the water had only receded a couple of feet.)

Agnes looms large in my memory.
