  •  The nuns have always been (22+ / 0-)

the positive face of the Church, at least in my lifetime.  I applaud their courage, but am not surprised by it in the least.  They were an obvious presence in the Civil Rights and Vietnam War protests because of their habits and their large numbers.  Though there are fewer of them now and they tend to blend in with the crowd, their commitment to social justice remains strong.  As Rachel said a couple of nights ago, "You don't mess with nuns!"

I was exceptionally fortunate to get to know Pat Farrell, the current president of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, who stood up to Cardinal Dolan and questioned the current focus on "religious freedom" versus social justice. She's either already at the Vatican or en route.  I knew her when she was finishing her clinical social worker training a decade ago, and was providing mental health and social services to torture survivors.  This is a woman who spent her formative years as a nun in El Salvador's civil war, doing her best to keep as many people as possible alive while her friends and co-religionists were being murdered by right-wing death squads.

She has more courage and has lived her faith with more dedication than the entire college of cardinals combined. The idea that she is considered less than a priest in any way is abhorent.  It's a great injustice that this good woman is supposed to subordinate herself to a bunch of men nearly all of whom lack her compassion, intelligence, or kindness... The idea that she should be chastized by a man like Cardinal Dolan, who paid off child rapists for their silence, is an outrage. I'm outside the church, a non-believer who still claims to recognize and respect a good christian when I see one.  She knows how hollow Dolan is, but along with her dedication to the truth as she sees it is a requirement for obedience.  I feel horrible for her.  She will probably be forced to back down just enough, just as Galileo did four hundred years ago, but she will be muttering under her breath and she won't stop pushing back.

but she and her sisters will win the war.

Nuns operate under a different set of rules than diocesan priests.  Priests* don't take a vow of poverty, which makes a huge difference in attitude about everything.  Nuns don't get their power from being rich.  They get it from being right.

*Those priests not in a religious order.
