  •  OK Let's not get too cynical here (14+ / 0-)

I personally know several people who have gotten pretty darned rich by hard work and talent. And by this, I mean they are multi-millionaires with nice houses, vacation getaways, and fancy cars. Not Mittens rich, mind you, and certainly not billionaires.

It is possible to be a good person and become rich.

That said, I have also worked with the corporate world and met many men who are top-level (Fortune 500) corporate CEO's, CFO's, etc. To a man they were not very bright, and not particularly knowledgeable about their company (none of them had started their company, they just took over from another executive). What they were was ruthless and charming. They could work a room.

Part of our nation's problem is that too many shop keepers and small business owners think they are just one sharp deal away from being a billionaire.

"Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat, but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires." - John Steinbeck
It's easy for the con men and sociopaths to manipulate these poor people to get them to act against their own best interests: Just tell them whom to blame for their lack of material success. It doesn't matter if what you tell them is true, just make it marginally convincing. Most people would rather believe their success is due to their own sterling qualities, while any personal failure is due to someone else's perfidy. The trick is getting them to blame the people they see as beneath them: Other poor people. If you get them hating the people who really oppress and harm them (yourself and the rich elites), you're a "socialist."
"Don't forget that most men with nothing would rather protect the possibility of becoming rich than face the reality of being poor." - from the play 1776
