  •  I'm sure he could do a pretty good chagrined, (6+ / 0-)

    ashamed little boy look though.

These guys really ought to meet with the nuns, why are they so wimpy? If they truly believe in what they are pushing on the country, they shouldn't be so afraid of a busload of nuns, for heaven's sake.

Doesn't it seem silly for them to run away and leave their staffs to talk with the nuns? You would think they would at least try to talk the nuns into seeing things their way.

I mean the Catholic guys, like Rep. Ryan and Senator Boehner. Since when do Catholic boys ignore nuns. This is just unheard of and so disrespectful.

of Catholic education, I can tell you why Ryan and Boehner are ignoring these nuns:  they're women and conservative Catholic men don't show much respect ever for any woman who would dare speak up to them.  This issue and how it's being handled by so-called "Catholic" men is a perfect example of how the Catholic Church itself dismisses and pointedly ignores women.  Women are to be seen and NOT heard.  They're to keep their mouths shut and do as they're told.  And that's a hard and fast rule with this bunch.  It's also why the Vatican right now has reprimanded the group that represents the majority of Catholic nuns in the U.S.  There is a specific bishop (whose name escapes me right now) who has been assigned to "work with" this group (which is code for shut them up and order them to get in line or else!).  What these nuns are doing, given the state of things in the U.S. Catholic Church today is incredibly brave.  (And just to be clear:  I no longer attend Church and haven't since the 1980s).

      •  I agree they are brave. I agree about what you are (10+ / 0-)

saying. I don't believe that normal Catholics aren't respectful to older women or to nuns. At least not in the Church I grew up in.

I think we have become cynical, due to the fact that our state government isn't listening to people, so much so that we had to try a recall to get them to listen.

I know that there are conservative men that don't really want women to speak out, they don't want any dissension at all. I get that.

But, the fact remains that being disrespectful to a nun is a sin. And not helping the poor is a sin of omission.

say a lot.  And the fact that Boehner and Ryan are being deliberately disrespectful to these nuns says a whole lot about what hypocrites they are.  I honestly don't think either of them cares if they offend these women by being disrespectful to them.  In their estimation, what these nuns are doing is wrong and therefore they owe them no respect whatsoever.  They can't be shamed----their political agenda and beliefs are what matter, not showing just basic courtesy to others, including those they disagree with.  It's what they do and who they are.

        •  Deliberately standing in the way of those who (4+ / 0-)

would help the poor (including blocking the President's jobs bill) is a sin of commission.

It fascinates me that all of these so-called religious men are filled with fervor and righteousness when it comes to female or gay sexuality (about which Jesus had ZERO to say) but are mysteriously sudden or obstructive when it comes to helping the poor (which was Jesus' central mission).

No wonder religious people are held in such contempt.  (sigh)

      •  It's real easy for them to dismiss (7+ / 0-)

these strong women when they're a thousand miles away but, let me tell you, they're too damn scared to do it to their faces.  If you're Catholic, there's nothing scarier than an angry nun who's looking you right in the eyeballs.  That's why these "Catholic" congressmen are running like mice.

Hey, Congressmen--they're coming for you.  You can't hide forever.

Sorry, everyone.  I didn't vote for him.  In fact, no one voted for him, which is a significant part of the problem.
