but this is good. a few examples does not a cultural phenomena make.

your cite of jensen seems to support his claim. and be weary of google searches--how do you know those are not reproductions?

this is the power of the myth. if the irish were so undesirable what explains their upward mobility, rise in the labor force, and political power in the machines of the day?

i would suggest reading the classic Ethnic Myth. It is a great book and the chapter on the labor market for maids is really spot on.

but the more important point is on these narratives, and how they become mythologized over time and in turn are used for a very particular type of political work for the Right against people of color.

to realize the virulence of the animus against the Irish in a highly respectable WASP journal like Harper's in the mid-19th century.  (And Nast was an immigrant German!)

The influence of the [executive] has increased, is increasing, and ought to be diminished.

that isn't the claim. the Irish Ape cartoon is iconic. But, and this is the fun of good social history and research, how do we reconcile that with Irish upward mobility, what cultural myths were produced in that moment which still resonate today?

      Organizing.
From the Molly Maguires, to Mother Jones, to the political ward bosses in some cities, there seems to be a common thread of strong organization.

from a bright young conservative: “I’m watching my first GOP debate…and WE SOUND LIKE CRAZY PEOPLE!!!!”
