There seemed to be a chorus of people talking about how growth will slow in the US because of problems in Europe, down to a 1% annualized GDP rate. So no new recession, but a very difficult economy to push uphill. If that is true we could see actual unemployment rise as new people enter the workforce and job growth slows to a trickle. However, U3 is very quirky and could decline just by people dropping out of the workforce for a few months. One piece of very good news is falling oil prices, although it is hard to forecast the future given all the instability in the Middle East where conflicts can spark sharp price increases. Here in California gas prices are under $4.00 for the first time in a while. If prices are under $4.00 on October that would be a big plus for the President.

I think this race is much more tenuous than you do, and will be very close. The President is the clear favorite, but it's not a lock. In 2008 Senator Obama had a perfect storm, transformative candidate, Bush fatigue, war fatigue, weak opponent, and a 3:1 money advantage. The POTUS does not have a perfect storm in 2012.

    "let's talk about that"

I don't know what I wrote that made you think I didn't see this race as tenuous or close. I certainly do.

And now I feel rather embarrassed. Still, the point of my diary was to focus on the narrowness of Romney's platform, as compared to McCain's or Bush's.

Republicans are far more socialist than Democrats. Just because they want to redistribute the wealth upwards does not make it any better.
