    of past campaigns where huge Democratic leads in the summer blew away with the autumn leaves. Dukakis, foe example.

      one poll said he was up 17, but it wasn't a typical result. At this point impressions about Obama are largely set. Dukakis was a blank slate, and he did not respond to the attacks  that set him back.

      Dukakis is the only time in my adult life Dems blew a summer lead.

      Kerry was in a tossup, never had a real lead, it was all margin-of-error in national polling and the battleground state polls all revealed a tough path to 270.  I disregarded it then, and learned my lesson:  the map is what matters.n hin

      Carter "blew" a summer lead, but in hindsight the conditions then were a disaster for him, nothing affecting any Democrat since then.

      Clinton in '92 trailed most of the year and took the lead only at and after the convention.

      They're really isn't a Dukakis example besides Dukakis himself.
