....is on DVD, and of course there are several recordings, including the New York Philharmonic concert version from a few years back.

There were other influences that fed the work, like Bernard Herrmann's music for the 1945 film Hangover Square (set in London), which Sondheim loved when it first appeared.  The story is that he went back and really read closely the music on the crazy composer-pianist's piano in the last scene, or listened to it a bunch of time, so that he could internalize it.  He also saw the dramatic potential in the Christopher Bond adaptation that he'd seen in the UK in the 1970's.  In fact, the director of OTSL's production, Ron Daniels, had a hand in the creation of the Bond play version of Sweeney Todd.

you just gave me WAY too much insider baseball for me to understand what you're saying.

I barely know what an RBI is.  ;-D

To make the argument that the media has a left- or right-wing, or a liberal or a conservative bias, is like asking if the problem with Al-Qaeda is do they use too much oil in their hummus. Al Franken

.....to understand :) .  It's also not that much insider baseball, as it's in bios of Sondheim and his own book.
