cognitive brain is capable of reasoning and rational thought, it actually does -- a questionable presumption in the case of instinct-driven humans whose cognitive functions are either impaired or separated from the brain stem.  How that happens is in dispute.  Since organisms can obviously survive, thrive and reproduce without cognition, the cognitive brain is an attribute man can do without. And many obviously do. Cognition of the self and the self-control it promotes seems to be located in or close to the frontal lobes, a part of the brain particularly susceptible to injury via concussion and more subtle insults whose consequences are hard to measure. The repetitive head trauma being experienced by youth engaged in various sports is now being studied to track the effect on cognitive function. The impaired memory functions we notice in individuals as age makes them less physically adept may well be just a matter of problems that were hidden becoming more noticeable.
