    in my uncle's TV store in Denver; had never heard anything like it! Black and white, maybe a 12-inch screen. The accents and weird clothes, the smoke and glaring lights and the sweat.

    And later when Eisenhower won, and not Stevenson, it felt like the end of an era; the military had won (very evident in 'tough' high-school talk), not education, intelligence, history, the arts. In my family there was a sense of mourning I'd never seen before.
