  •  I respectfully disagree... (4.00)
We don't need to coerce or replace these 35. They're just fine where they are.

Right now, we need warm bodies. Most of these BDDs are in districts that could easily go Republican, and we're still way in the minority. Let's wait until we regain majorities to have ourselves a purge. We're a much broader coalition than the Republicans and we're never going to have the party loyalty they do. To tell the truth, I don't want us to have the same level of party loyalty -- I think the Rs' loyalty is pathological.

I'd much rather we spent our energies reframing many of the issues that are in front of us so that these BDDs can feel safer voting with the party.

    •  The South is not our target (4.00)
If we pursue the Southern strategy, we'll wind up with more Blue Dogs.  Many of these folks are expressing Southern values, or are afraid to vote against Republican interests.  Hence more Democrats from marginal Southern districts will probably swell their numbers.

We should focus more on the Western states, and consolidating Democratic representation in the West, Northeast and Industrial Midwest.  If the South goes solid Republican it'll be a shame, but we won't lose as much as we think.  Some of these Dems are already Republicans, just taking Democratic money and ballot spaces.

      •  I would disagree... (none)
remember that there are only 30-some congressional districts in the west, Sans California, which is gerrymandered out of control and Oregon/Washington which exhibit strong coastal/inland tendencies.  Picking up a number of seats in the west would be nice, but it won't be enough.

I would agree that the industrial Midwest and the Northeast need to be shored up.

I would also focus on the urban south, such as New Orleans, Atlanta, Memphis and Charlotte.  (Yes I know this is where allot of the blue dogs already are).

Possibly a look at Florida, and Texas (yes Texas) also.  Remember Gerrymandering can backfire on a candidate that encroaches too much into democratic territory (Delay anyone).
