According to the Wikipedia articles, the Turkish military has some 660K active members, while the Syrian military has about 304K active. The Syrians ought not to provoke a sleeping giant.

As for Russian assistance, despite international treaties, I figure Turkey could close the Bosphorus to the Russian naval fleet in the Black Sea long enough to prevent the Russians from helping Syria in any major way. (Any attempt to shoot their way through would be costly in men & equipment; fancy running a fleet thru the Dardanelles with land-based missiles on either side?)

I figure the reason Turkey is holding back is that -- unlike one idiot who went to war in the Middle East in the last 10 years, the Turkish government is worried about what they would do after they enter Damascus. They probably have no one they could trust on the ground to run things afterwards, & the last thing the Turkish government wants is to be tied down in a foreign country for 10 or more years, & being responsible for shepherding it towards a stable government.

Turkey has 5,000 tanks. Syria has about 600.

Good point about the Bosporus. The Russians have a very critical interest in not losing access to the Mediterranean.

          •  I imagine they do (0+ / 0-)

I'd still rather not be outnumbered 8-1 were I Syria.

Russia has 20,000 MBT. That would make things interesting.

      •  Oxidation has saved Turkey the trouble (0+ / 0-)

No need to close the strait... Russia's Black Sea fleet has been quietly rusting for decades.
