  •  The event happened a short time (8+ / 0-)

    after the F4 went down.

It appears that the Syrian government had not been informed that the aircraft would be coming to participate in search and rescue and experienced "a short period of hostile fire" which ended when the Turkish Foreign Ministry informed the Syrian Government that the aircraft was being sent to join in the search and rescue efforts.

    The aircraft wasn't hit.

Lamb chop, we can quibble what to call it, but I think we can both agree it's creepy.

Just like the even tone you've maintained in your diaries on these incidents.

Many comments here are taking matters way out of proportion. Perhaps Turkish commanders did order their F4 to intentionally enter Syrian airspace ... but it probably was an error. And perhaps Syrian higher-ups wanted to 'send a message' by downing that plane. But OTOH it could have been a local air defense commander who decided to shoot first ask questions later.

We don't know. But I really honestly do not see this thing turning into full bore Turkish-Syrian hostilities, or involving NATO, and certainly Russia Iran and China are not going to intervene.
