As I said, a bad negotiating strategy.  They tried to design a deal that would go through, and didn't keep any chips to trade away they didn't really want.  Obama paid lip service to the public option, but it's clear that that was traded away at the very beginning even while Obama made misleading allusions to it long after.

Medicare for All should have been the opening bid, even if Obama wanted something less.  The man has proven over and over that he can't negotiate his way out of a paper bag.

      you know the answer.

He didn't support it in the primaries.  How can he trade away something he didn't support in the first place?

And as a negotiating strategy it would have been silly - I doubt there are 30 votes in the Senate for it.

The single payer fight was lost when none of the three major candidates for the Democratic nomination supported it.

There were never the votes for what you wanted .

His strategy was bad, his goal was unworkable (didn't control costs meaningfully), and he was double-crossed by his chosen partners.

He picked his approach, which was needlessly complicated and relied on trusting the wrong people.  The fact that he wasn't for the sensible and simple solution doesn't absolve him, but only makes him look worse with the inevitable denouement.
