  •  Lackland was my USAF Basic Training Base (11+ / 0-)

back in the late '60's.  There was talk of this even then.  I was later a target as a young male airman in Vietnam - told the Chaplain - nothing was done - usually, nothing was done in those days - especially regarding males - one was told to "tone it down" i.e. his being gay.  Proving sexual assault decades later is hell.  President Obama & Secretary Shinseki, in the Fall of 2010, finally ordered the VA to do the right thing and, all things equal or indicating the sexual assault (acting out, life issues, substance abuse issues, etc. over the years), to grant some service connection (usually 30%).

This is a major issue especially in war zones and aboard ships.  The numbers of female and male service members who have been sexually assaulted would astound the average American.

I have tremendous gratitude in my heart for President Obama and Secretary Shinseki doing the right thing on this issue for all veterans who have shown that they were sexually assaulted.

Thank you for writing this important Diary.

I'll be honest, it was Joan Brooker who started me down this path. She invited Col Ann Wright and Elizabeth Stinson to speak at Netroots. The film was screened there as well. I couldn't just ignore it... it's a problem that just begs to be fixed. I've lived an entire life with the military as a kid and as an adult and I absolutely hate the idea that we can't do the right thing.

    •  Tommy I am so sorry that happened to you (1+ / 0-)

I wonder though, with so many felons and criminals being directed into the military, instead of jail, right up til the 90s, how much of this affected sex crimes and harassment of males and females in uniform.

Male rape in jail is a big taboo subject. But I wonder what happens when we have repeat offenders being sent into the uniform as a means of "reform".
