  •  Even seemingly simple ones aren't easy (6+ / 0-)

    Manor...is pronounced may-nur, not man-or
    Elgin...is pronounced el-gen, not el-jin
    Burnet...is pronounce burn-it, not bur-net
Buchanan (as in the lake) is buck-hannon, not byoo-canon
Pedernales is pronounced pur-di-nales, not ped-ur-nales (i.e. the "d" and the "r" sounds get tranposed among other corruptions)
    Pecos is pay-kus

Mexia and Manchaca gets mentioned below, but add to that Palacios, Falfurrias, Anahuac, Refugio, Leakey, Waxahachie, Nacogdoches, Iraan, Lajitas, Quitaque

And if you are in Gruene and try to pronounce it using the German pronunciation, you'll get funny looks. Gruene means green and that's how it is pronounced.

    •  Don't forget Boerne (5+ / 0-)

... with the pronunciation of "Bernie." German visitors get confused because the name of Germany's most popular cop show character is "Professor Boerne" (he's an ME -- imagine a cross between Dr. House and Frazier Crane). When they pronounce the town like the professor, people look at them really funny.

...if you haven't seen the movie, it is a hoot. Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine, Matthew McConaughey and the real townsfolk of Carthage were great in another gem from Richard Linklater. A dark comedy for sure, but it almost seems like a docu-comedy. An interesting look into small town Texas.

            That was a great film.

All my friends in Houston were theatre and film types and musicians. My old friend Jonathan Caouette (if you haven't seen "Tarnation", you should) has a new film out as a matter of fact. He's a Texas filmmaker. Just got an email from him.

I was the musical director for Infernal Bridegroom Productions in Houston for a number of years. The people who started that company, I went to high school with pretty much all of them.
