    homes which implement FireWise recommendations require much less protection - in fact, very little protection.

    California is, AFAIK, still the only state that requires, by law,  people who live in high fire danger areas to behave responsibly and intelligently.

    Whether a home is destroyed in a wildfire is mostly a property of the home and immediate (30 foot radius) surroundings, and not determined by the severity of the fire.

    A crown fire (the most severe) doesn't hang around long enough to ignite a house from more than 30 feet away, but firebrands or ember showers (or sparks, if you prefer) can ignite a shake shingle roof, pine needles in the gutter or against the siding, firewood stacked near a house, or dry vegetation under a porch or deck and burn the house to the ground.
