    because his primary interest is avoiding any public scrutiny of his own ill-timed, ill-planned, and poorly-executed "war on drugs."  By going hard after the cartels without having the actual resources to defeat them, Calderon unleashed a brutal and vicious cycle of violence that very quickly spiraled completely out of control.

    His foolish idealism is directly responsible for thousands of civilian deaths in Mexico.  He should have known better, because the brutality of the Mexican cartels has been well-known for years.  See, for example, Paco Taibo's chilling Four Hands, a noir reading of the internal workings of the drug trade published all the way back in 1994.
