      The National Health Service just after WWII.

      An astute politician saw servicemen returning home and pondered how the war effort stimulated the economy......and he realized that caring for the war wounded plus the whole nation would be a peaceful way to stimulate the economy.

      We might have had universal healthcare after WWII if people like Ronald Reagan hadn't misattributed Britain's shabbiness --it was the war spending and NOT Socialism that lowered the standard of living.

      Also, people like Reagan's father-in-law (wealthy Republican doctors) who spread vicious lies about the supposed evils of changing our healthcare system.

      The founder of the British healthcare system said that in order to achieve it he did have to fill a lot of mouths with gold (rich doctors objecting to change).
