  •  It's a short term victory that makes the long term (6+ / 0-)

battle for universal coverage much harder.

For profit health care is the ultimate victor today.

    •  Maybe so, but I still won't make what's perfect... (0+ / 0-)

... the enemy of what's good. Heck, I would have much preferred a single-payer plan or some variation of Medicare for all. That being said, I also understand we just did not have the votes for those types of solutions even when Democrats had a majority in the House and Senate. I blame the conservative, blue dog Dems in both chambers.

Yes, it's true that "for profit health care is the ultimate victor today," but that doesn't mean all of the people who will ultimately get access to health care where they wouldn't have it before are losers. Also, I don't see any way we could keep the good parts of the ACA, such as the ban on denying coverage to folks with pre-existing conditions, without expanding the pool of insurance policy holders. Otherwise, the insurance companies either start finding new excuses to deny people coverage again or they raise premiums through the roof to where nobody can afford it anyway.

In the end, I really wish Dems and progressives could be as unified for our goals as the other side seems to be for theirs. We should have been able to pass true reform instead of settling for what we have now.

just like the Republicans.  Our Republic is deeply corrupt.  No one with significant power will fight for the 99%.
