  •  Are we really sure Chimpy fucked up? (none)
Okay - I agree that the preznit got beaucoup bad press today from the whole means testing & reduced benefits trip-up.  But let's remember the puppet master(s) who really move marrionette Pretzeldent Pinocchio - Rove/Cheney.

Do we really think Chimpy would screw up that badly under their tutelage on one of their most important "presidential legacy" items?

How about this possibility: what if using the "means testing" card is a ruse to get the populace up in arms and thinking that SSA is just "social welfare" and not a "retirement fund"?  Once they can rile the electorate on that meme, it becomes a lot easier to convince them to blow the whole m-f'ing thing up.

Is it possible that Kap'n Karl had this planned out, and rather than smarting behind the doors of the WH today, Cheney and the Rove-ians spent the day high-fiving one another?  I mean, after all, he is the Architect.

    •  Private accounts (none)
I don't think he has fucked up on this enough.
They are already preparing for 2008 and 2012
If you know your SS benefits will be reduced, isn't this a good reason for you to invest as much as possible in private accounts. That is his agenda!
Now, if more money is invested in the stock market, it will drive up dow jones. Wonderful idea, everybody will be happy, we'll all get soo rich, right? And we will 'lemmingly' elect another Chimp. But wait until we late babyboomers retire, then a whole bunch of us take out money from our stock investments. This pretty sure will cause an enduring and significant slump in the values of stocks in 30 years or so.
      Thanks a bunch
    •  An interesting stretch. (none)
but a stretch just the same.

Bush believes in what he is doing.  He's not stupid really, and I think Atrios pointed out Dubya's skill elucidating complex actuarial material about Social Security,  however, it looks like Chimpy McFlightsuit reached all the wrong conclusions.

As Bush believes really believes in whathe is doing.  Rove, for all of his vileness, is not too worried, as Chimpy will not be running again.  Rove has two jobs, keep the pubbies in power, and build a "legacy" for the Chimp.

So, no matter how far Bush inserts his foot into his mouth, no matter how patently offensive Chimpy's initiatives become, no matter what the "flying monkey" does, it is pretty clear that Karl has other more pressing issues to worry about.  Especially as Repubs balk at Bolton,  and Dems find a spine, rove has to focus more on his schemes for a one-party state, and this will not be easy if the R's start to think for themselves, and their own seats in light of the Schiavo fiasco, Iraq, Ritter's revelations about Iran, and of course Bush's ill-advised attempt to sink Social Security which is bombing badly.

Bush is well on his way to lame duck status far sooner than anyone expected.  Cheney doesn't need Bush! Big Time Dick needs perpetuation of the neo-con influence over the Republican party and the grotesque duplicity that Rove has used to bring the religious extremeists into the Repub fold at the expense of Republican middle of the roaders.

The more isolated Bush seems, the more, I think, we can safely determine that Rove is having some difficulty in keeping his fantasies alive.
