  •  Narcotics Anonymous (16+ / 0-)

    Meetings can be found here!

I have been an addict my entire teen age and adult life.  I have had periods of clean time from ten years to three days.  I have currently been drug free (including alcohol) for 42 months.

I have had my encounters with Meth and it is not pleasant.

Most non-addicts and even a few recovering addicts wonder why someone would so clearly and evidently self-destruct.

It starts out feeling very good.  Over time it becomes the only way to feel normal and function.  Eventually it turns into feeling so bad, physically mentally, cognitively that the only way to find even a small degree of relief is to use the  drug again.  This is so selfish and so self centered but it is not a choice.  It might be compared to Narcissism imposed from the outside.   Yes even at the price of total and complete self-destruction through prison, mental institution, or death.

Narcotics Anonymous is the only thing that has consistently worked for me.  Even most treatment centers concede that some sort of 12 step support group is necessary for ongoing recovery and consistent improvement in the life of an addict.

As an atheist I struggle with the spiritual aspects of NA and the 12 steps but it is nothing compared to the absolute hell of destroying myself and hurting the people who love me the most with my own selfish death spiral.  I have a network of supportive friends through NA so its not all bad.  In fact it is pretty damn good.

    Paul can be helped.

Why I have a hard time condemning people for addiction.

I do not represent Narcotic Anonymous or speak for them.  They do that quite well with their own literature and this link.

Is there is a chemical imbalance of some kind in your brain.

For a person without that imbalance, it feels good, but not that good. Certainly not good enough to plow through the bad "side effect" of the drug. A person has to be persistent to become addicted!

I'm speaking from the point of view of having a family with additive tendencies, with many having a problem with alcohol and other depressive drugs.  I lucked out and didn't get the chemistry, except when it comes to tobacco. That's the only drug that I jump right from nothing to two packs a day if I have any at all.

My siblings spend their lives always seeming to be on their last nerve, nervous and twitchy if things don't go the way they think things should. They can't go with the flow, can't let go. That's why they want the depressive drugs. It makes them relax and feel really good, too good!

    •  42 months: excellent. (0+ / 0-)

Hang in there and stay in recovery.  We're all rooting for you.

Since you've had relapses, you know what the risk factors are that lead to them, so by now you have a pretty good list of situations to avoid.  The key is to avoid those situations entirely, and anything similar.
