  •  substances fill a need (12+ / 0-)

They become their own need in time, but until you address why someone turns to artificial pleasure in the first place, the odds are good that they'll either relapse or switch to a different substance.  Helping someone through withdrawal is necessary, but if all they have to look forward to is the same old shit but without the opportunity to blast their brains on neurotransmitters, why wouldn't they go back?

There's a continuum between "tried it once", recreational users, hard-core addicts whose lives revolve around servicing their habit, and the completely non-functional like "Paul": is time really the only difference between them?  Brain chemistry is probably one difference, but I'd bet that environment is another.

Life sucks for most people, and all that working hard and playing by the rules usually gets you is the opportunity to do it again tomorrow.

To those who say the New Deal didn't work: WWII was also government spending
