  •  I have a different strategy (4+ / 0-)

I give money to lots of folks that ask for it on DK, for various causes and on behalf of DKers.  Maybe some of them are scammers (though I doubt it).  Giving money is something I can do, and it often provides immediate help.  If a story seems credible, and other long-time DKers support the cause and person, that's pretty much enough for me.

Then again, I give money to panhandlers on the street, too. I don't concern myself with whether they're telling me the truth or if they're going to spend the money on something I might not approve of.  I figure that's none of my business.  My business is to share what I can spare with people who seem to need it.

As for identity theft, I'm careful with my passwords, and I'm good at not getting phished. If someone tries to steal my identity, they'll have a lot of fun trying to get around my crappy credit rating.
